Retired Employee Duped of ₹25,000 Through Fake Bank App Update in Khandwa

Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh — A retired electricity department employee was cheated of ₹25,000 after cyber fraudsters trapped him with a fake bank app update. The victim, Mahesh Prasad Malviya, has filed a complaint at Kotwali police station.

According to police, Malviya had recently downloaded a bank-related app. Soon after, he received a WhatsApp video call where the caller claimed that the app needed an urgent update. The fraudster then sent him an APK file and instructed him to install it.

The moment Malviya downloaded the file, his phone froze. Multiple OTPs began appearing on his device, and soon ₹25,000 was deducted from his bank account without authorization.

Police have launched an investigation and cautioned the public against installing APK files or clicking links sent through unsolicited messages, especially those claiming to be from banks.
