DSP Among Three Duped of ₹3.31 Lakh in Cyber Fraud in Dehradun

Cyber fraud cases continue to rise in Dehradun, with the latest incidents involving the city’s DSP and two other local residents who were collectively cheated of ₹3.31 lakh. Police have registered cases against unknown fraudsters and launched an investigation.

DSP Loses Money in Fake Online Trading Scheme

In the first complaint, Dehradun DSP Ravikant Semwal, a resident of Banjarawala, reported that he came across a trading advertisement on Facebook on October 7. The ad falsely appeared to be promoted by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

After clicking the link, he submitted his phone number and other details for registration. Soon after, he received an ISD call and was convinced to invest in the scheme. His first investment on October 7 showed a profit of ₹1,687, which further encouraged him. The fraudsters then promised higher returns and made him deposit ₹2.20 lakh. Once the amount was transferred, they stopped responding.

Another Resident Targeted Through Fake Customer Care Number

In the second case, Gagan Puri, a resident of Ruchipura, Niranjanpur, filed a complaint after losing money through a fake customer support scam.

He stated that some amount was deducted from his Zepto app account. When he searched online for Zepto’s customer care number, he unknowingly contacted a fraudster. On October 21, he received a video call from a person posing as a customer support executive, who assured him that the deducted money would be refunded.

Under this excuse, the scammer gained access to his Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm accounts and withdrew ₹1.11 lakh.

Police Begin Investigation

Patel Nagar police station in-charge Chandrabhān Adhikari confirmed that cases have been registered in both incidents. He added that investigations are underway to identify and arrest the cybercriminals involved.
