According to police, the accused had contacted the Indore-based software engineer via WhatsApp and hired him to develop a new gaming application. The developer completed the task and delivered the app. However, instead of paying him in Indian currency, the buyers claimed they would transfer the amount through a Chinese crypto exchange operating on the Dark Web.
When the developer refused and insisted on receiving payment in INR, the accused became hostile. They began harassing him using two different WhatsApp numbers, sending threatening messages and intimidating him.
The situation escalated when the accused tampered with photographs of the developer’s family members and turned them into objectionable images. They then created fake social media accounts to circulate the morphed photos, attempting to defame and mentally torture the victim.
Distressed by the blackmail and constant harassment, the software engineer filed a complaint with the Lasudia Police.
Additional DCP Rajesh Dandotiya confirmed that an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the IT Act, including charges related to cyberstalking. He also stated that the investigation is underway and efforts are being made to trace the two suspicious mobile numbers used in the crime.
Police have launched a search to identify and arrest the accused involved in the fraud and blackmailing attempt.
