According to the FIR filed at NM Joshi Marg Police Station in Mumbai, the incident took place on September 27, 2025. Vijayeta received a text message claiming that a parcel delivery had been attempted twice and asked her to confirm her details to avoid the parcel being returned.
Believing it to be genuine, Vijayeta clicked on the link in the message and entered her ICICI Bank credit card information, thinking it was for a small delivery charge. Soon after, she received an alert from her bank stating that a transaction of EUR 1,730.76 (around ₹1.79 lakh) had been made at the Hyatt Regency hotel in France.
Realising she had been duped, Vijayeta immediately blocked her card and lodged a complaint on the national cybercrime portal. She later approached the police station on November 2, 2025, to file a detailed FIR.
The police have registered the case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, which deal with identity theft and cheating through electronic means.
For context, Vijayeta Basu, who works as a marketing manager, is the younger sister of popular Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay alert against such fake delivery scams, advising people not to click on suspicious links or share financial details online.
