According to officials, fraudsters are circulating APK files through WhatsApp, often appearing to come from familiar numbers. Once opened, these files allow criminals to hack mobile phones and steal personal and banking information.
Cyber expert Samarpal explained that an APK is the file format used to install mobile apps on Android devices and typically contains essential code and resources. Cybercriminals exploit this format by packaging malicious software inside seemingly harmless files.
Authorities say scammers are not only using fake wedding cards but also sending files disguised as traffic challans and other official documents. They have advised people to stay cautious and avoid opening APK, PIF, or VBS files received through messaging apps.
“Do not download or open suspicious files. If absolutely necessary, consult a trusted person before installing any APK,” said Shaivya Goyal, ADCP Cyber Security.
Officials emphasized that cybercriminals constantly evolve their methods, and public awareness is the strongest shield against such frauds.
