The case came to light in the Civil Lines police station area after a complaint was filed by Sanjay Sahni, a resident of Shankar Nagar. Sahni searched for a contact number online to apply for a new State Bank of India ATM card. He found a number through Google and contacted it, unaware that it belonged to a fraudster.
The accused instructed him to install a mobile application and asked for the last six digits of his ATM card. Soon after, Sahni discovered that ₹8 lakh had been withdrawn from his bank account.
Following the complaint, the police began a technical investigation using Google records, bank details, and mobile tracking. Through surveillance, the accused was located in 24 Parganas, West Bengal. A police team reached the spot and arrested the fraudster, identified as Abdullah Lashkar.
Police sources revealed that Lashkar is already wanted in cyber fraud cases in Jharkhand and Haryana.
The Raipur Range Police have urged people not to rely on contact numbers found through random online searches and to avoid sharing banking details or installing unknown apps. They also reminded citizens to use official bank websites or helplines for any service-related queries, especially concerning ATM cards and online banking.
