The case began on September 12, when a woman filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station (East), stating that an unknown person had created a fake Instagram account in her name. The account was being used to upload and share morphed photos and videos, damaging her reputation.
Acting under the supervision of ACP Cyber Crime Priyanshu Diwan and Inspector Amit Kumar, the police traced the accused to Guwahati, where he was arrested on November 20. He was produced before a local court and brought to Gurugram on transit remand.
During interrogation, Banik confessed to knowing the victim and admitted to committing the crime due to old enmity. He had allegedly taken her photos from social media, morphed them using an AI tool, and posted them through a fake Instagram profile.
Police said further investigation is underway.
