Election Commission Warns Public About OTP Fraud During SIR in West Bengal

The Election Commission of India has issued a warning about fraudsters trying to trick people by asking for one-time passwords (OTP) in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal.

A notice signed by the Additional Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal states clearly that no OTP is required for any work related to SIR. The Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office or the National Election Commission never asks for OTPs for voter list correction or any SIR-related process. The CEO’s office has also issued a press release to inform the public.

Recently, many people complained that they received messages claiming to be from the Election Commission asking for an OTP for the SIR process. Some people shared the OTP and were cheated. Police said a gang is behind this fraud and is trying to make money illegally.

To warn citizens, the CEO of West Bengal said, “No OTP is being requested from the Election Commission of India or the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal. No OTP will be asked on any mobile number for any work related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) or voter list revision.”

Meanwhile, the National Election Commissioner recently reviewed the SIR progress with Chief Electoral Officers from 12 states. The Commissioner asked West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal for a detailed report and expressed satisfaction with the work done so far. Officials say the door-to-door distribution of SIR forms is almost complete, and instructions have been given to upload the forms quickly.

The CEO’s office has also set up a system to receive complaints related to SIR. People who did not receive the SIR form or want to report any issue can contact the following numbers:

• WhatsApp: 9830078250

• Phone: 1950, 22310850

• Email: (as provided by CEO office)

Complaints can be made through WhatsApp, phone calls, or email.

The Election Commission has urged the public to stay alert and avoid sharing OTPs with anyone.
