Man Loses ₹1 Lakh After Downloading Fake App While Searching for Doctor’s Number

A resident of Bajuheri village under Kaliyar police station limits lost ₹1 lakh to cyber fraudsters after downloading a malicious app sent to him while he was searching online for a doctor’s phone number.

According to his complaint, Jitendra Singh had looked up a doctor’s contact details in Roorkee on social media and called the number he found. Soon after, he received a WhatsApp link to an unknown application. Believing it to be related to his enquiry, he downloaded it without suspicion.

The app turned out to be a remote-access tool, giving the fraudsters control of his phone. The mobile number was linked to his mother’s Union Bank of India account in Roorkee. Once the phone was compromised, the fraudsters withdrew ₹50,000 each in two transactions.

Jitendra Singh informed the bank immediately, but the amount had already been debited. He then lodged a complaint at Piran Kaliyar police station.

Considering the gravity of the incident, police registered a case against an unknown accused. Kaliyar SHO Ravindra Kumar confirmed that an FIR has been filed and an investigation is underway.
