According to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Praveen Dhiman, the arrests were made under Sections 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, which deal with cheating and impersonation through digital means.
The first case dates back to September 17, 2024, when an investor from Nagrota Surian in Kangra district was duped of ₹71.62 lakh. Acting on leads obtained during the investigation, the cyber police team arrested Manoj Kumar Gurjar, a resident of Saloda Industrial Area in Gangapur, Rajasthan. The arrest was made within the jurisdiction of Sawai Madhopur Police Station.
In another case registered on February 5, 2024, an investor from Palampur was allegedly cheated of ₹22.25 lakh in a similar online investment fraud. The accused, Chandra Mohan Sharma, a resident of Vijay Nagar in Mirzapur, Ganganagar, Rajasthan, was arrested from the jurisdiction of Bindaika Police Station, Jaipur.
Inspector Kamlesh Kumar, who led the operation, said that the police recovered ₹2.08 lakh from the accused during the course of the investigation. Legal proceedings have been initiated against both individuals.
The arrests mark a significant step in the ongoing crackdown against cyber fraud in Himachal Pradesh, as police continue to trace digital money trails and identify interstate fraud networks targeting unsuspecting investors.
