Playback Singer Chinmayi Sripaada Files Cybercrime Complaint Over Online Abuse

Hyderabad: Playback singer and voice artiste Chinmayi Sripaada has lodged a complaint with the Hyderabad Cybercrime Police, alleging sustained online harassment and abusive comments targeting her and her children.

The incident reportedly began after comments made by her husband, actor and filmmaker Rahul Ravindran, who stated that it was Chinmayi’s personal choice whether or not to wear a mangalsutra. His remark sparked a wave of misogynistic attacks during an X Spaces discussion, where participants allegedly made derogatory and violent comments.

Social media user Yashaswini P first drew attention to the abuse, tagging authorities and urging Chinmayi to take legal action. In response, Chinmayi took to X (formerly Twitter), expressing frustration over the repeated harassment. “These men are basically saying my kids should die. Please help,” she wrote, tagging Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar and stating she was willing to pursue the case even if it took years.

Commissioner Sajjanar promptly directed the cybercrime unit to take action. Following her formal complaint, the police registered an FIR under Section 67 of the IT Act, which pertains to the transmission of obscene or offensive material online, along with Sections 78 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to threats to personal safety and intermediary accountability for online content.

The investigation into the online harassment is currently underway.
