Dahod Athlete Shocked as Friends Use His Identity to Run Cyberfraud Firm

A 26-year-old football and kabaddi player from Dahod was stunned to discover that his close friends had used his name and identity to run a cyberfraud company registered in Gandhinagar. The truth emerged only after Hyderabad police detained him for questioning earlier this month.

According to investigators, the complainant, a resident of Faliyugam village in Dahod, met the accused while studying at Government Polytechnic College, Dahod. In February 2023, they moved together to Gandhinagar and rented a house in Kudasan. While the complainant enrolled at Indrashil University in Mehsana to pursue higher studies, the accused joined LDRP College in Sector 15.

In July 2023, the accused proposed starting an IT company. Trusting his friends, the 26-year-old agreed and became a co-director of the firm, which was registered in Sargasan. Bank accounts were then opened in both their names for company operations.

Police later found that these accounts were being used for cyberfraud activities in multiple states. Meanwhile, the complainant remained unaware of the scam, focusing on his sports training. Whenever he asked about the company’s progress, the accused reportedly told him that the firm had shut down due to financial losses.

On January 7, Hyderabad police detained him after tracing several cyberfrauds back to the company’s bank accounts. During questioning, he learned that his own friends had misused his identity and the firm’s documents to run cyber scams across India.

Further investigation revealed that 26 cybercrime cases had been registered against the company in different states. Infocity police in Gandhinagar have now filed an FIR and launched a detailed probe to track the full extent of the fraud and the people involved.

The case highlights how identity misuse within trusted circles is emerging as a serious threat in cybercrime investigations.
